Why We Formed
The people in Prince George's County want a voice to address discriminiation and disparities. They want to join an NAACP branch that will be that voice and will not be afraid to take on controversial issues.
So after careful review of the demographics in the County, the gaps in the staggering statistics of racial discrimination and disparities, problems and solutions, impacts and possibilities, we gave serious deliberation and decided the best thing we could do for Prince George' County was to establish an additional branch.
In November 2007, we formed an organizing committee to work on securing an additional NAACP branch in the County. We traveled to the National NAACP offices to research on starting an additional branch. We were informed that we needed to secure 100 adult paid members, documentation on why an additional branch would benefit Prince George's County and a boundary map stating what area we would cover. We also learned that Baltimore County and other major cities also had more than one branch.
We.decided to name this branch "The Greater Beltway Branch" and submitted our proposal to the Maryland State President of the NAACP.
